Alternative Goal Setting Advice
As the year comes to an end, it’s hard to escape the flood of reflection and goal setting content – whether it’s scrolling on social media or someone asking what you want to achieve in 2025. Sometimes this energy can feel so exciting and other times it is completely overwhelming. So, if you’re feeling a little overwhelmed by it all right now, this is your loving reminder: you don’t have to do what everyone else is doing. Read on for some alternative goal setting advice.
You Don’t Have to Set Goals in January
Just because everyone else is setting goals, doesn’t mean you have to. Yes, it can be helpful to piggyback off the collective momentum of the New Year. But you don’t have to. You can set goals in February, March, July, or whenever feels right for you. Your timeline is your own and there’s no universal rule that says you must participate in January’s focus on planning.
Social Media is a Snapshot
What you see on social media is just a glimpse of someone’s life. If scrolling through yearly reviews and vision boards inspires and motivates you, go ahead and enjoy them. But if it leaves you feeling drained or inadequate, it might be time to mindfully reduce your screen time over the next few weeks. Protect your energy and focus on what brings you joy.
Your Year is Enough
Just because everyone else seems to have had their “best year yet” doesn’t mean you’ve failed if you didn’t. Life is a constant flow of highs, lows and everything in between. Whether this year has been a triumph, a challenge, or somewhere in the middle, know this: you are enough. And you have time. There is no expiration date on growth, happiness or fulfilment.
Find Your Own Way
If you are wanting to set goals, choose an approach that feels good for you. Love vision boards? Great, make one. Hate them? That’s okay too. Goal setting isn’t about following a cookie-cutter method because you think you should. I would recommend spending some time reflecting on how you have set goals in the past, what you’ve enjoyed and what you haven’t, as well as researching other goal setting methods. It’s about discovering what resonates with you and supports your unique path. You can get my comprehensive goal setting guidance free when you purchase The Breakthrough Tapes.
Be Kind to Yourself
There is so much power and value in reflecting and setting goals, but it shouldn’t become another reason to be hard on yourself. If you feel overwhelmed or just don’t want to participate in the new year excitement, that’s okay. Don’t use this time as an opportunity to tell yourself you’re not enough or that you’ve failed. You haven’t.
However, you’re choosing to approach this season, know that you’re doing a good job. It doesn’t need to look like any of your previous years or like anyone else’s. Take a deep breath, focus on what truly matters to you and step into the New Year in your way, on your own terms.
You’ve got this!
