Quitting Jobs, Career Rock Bottom and Finding Purpose
Are you feeling stuck, lost and confused with what to do next? Does the question, “what am I doing with my life?” keep going round and round in your mind. You’re trying to figure it out, but you have no idea where to start – let me help.
Welcome to my What Am I Doing With My Life Blog Series where I will be sharing key insights, actionable tips and advice from inspirational women. Spoiler alert – they had no idea what they were doing with their life at one point too!
I have always found it incredibly helpful and reassuring hearing about other peoples’ journeys and how they have navigated the normal ups and downs, which led me to launching my podcast – What Am I Doing With My Life? With Elyssa Desai.
And now in this blog series, I will be delving into each conversation to share the key insights and advice to help you take action and get unstuck.
My Journey
My journey has been full of “what am I doing with my life” moments. I felt overwhelmed and unsure, scared to make the “wrong” decision. But hitting career rock bottom didn’t mean failure – it actually gave me an opportunity to reflect, reassess and pivot my career (again).
I have completely overhauled my mindset – shifted my limiting beliefs, overcome my fears, gained new perspectives, identified my values – and know this has played such a big part in my journey.
What To Do When You Have No Idea What You’re Doing With Your Life
There is No Right or Wrong Decision:
Take the pressure of choices being right or wrong and instead recognise that every decision is simply an opportunity to learn. My job in marketing felt like the complete “wrong” choice after I had made BUT it was actually the best thing to happen to me in my career. Remember you always make the best decision for yourself with the knowledge and intuition you have at that time. Even if something doesn’t work out, it’s not a failure - it’s a stepping stone leading you to greater clarity.
Mindset is Everything:
Your mindset is so KEY! I can’t emphasise this enough. Having a mindset that not only supports you but propels you towards the life that you want will make such a big difference when you’re trying to make changes. It will feel like you’re swimming with the current rather than against it. Investing in creating a supportive mindset will be so worth it, trust me. A great place to start with this is through The Breakthrough Tapes and 1:1 Coaching.
Exploration and Experimentation Is Key:
If you don’t know what you’re doing with your life then I recommend leaning into having fun exploring and experimenting. It can feel so heavy to feel lost and I want you to tap into that childlike joy and wonder. Figuring out what you want to do with your life gets to be fun! How can you tap into the fun energy about all the possibilities available to you?
Talk to People:
Connecting with others has been an absolute gamechanger in my journey. Whether it is someone giving you a bit of a motivation boost to keep going, speaking to someone in a role you’re interested in or connecting with others who feel lost. You never know what someone might say that could change your whole career and life trajectory.
You Don’t Need to do it Alone:
It is a complete myth that we need to navigate life alone and it’s weak to ask for help. It is such a strength! Getting an external perspective can be invaluable – whether it is helping you to identify your strengths, recognise your values, work through your unconscious blocks or overcome your limiting beliefs. This might be a friend, family member, connecting to other people who are navigating life or working with someone.
Clarity Comes Through Action:
It’s so easy to fall into the trap of thinking, I’ll take action when I have clarity. But the more you stay in this mindset, the more stuck you will feel. Ultimately, we get more clarity through taking action, through making decisions and trying something, figuring out if it feels good or not, then making another decision. I really encourage you to start taking action – what is 1 thing you can do today? It can be small but taking that 1 piece of action helps you to build momentum, which builds motivation and leads to even more clarity.
Magic is Outside of Your Comfort Zone:
I know it can be so scary to step out of your comfort zone, feel your heart start to beat quicker and panic to kick in. One of the things I learnt in my journey is the things that scare me are the exact things I’m meant to be doing. It is completely normal to feel fear when something is new. I reframed fear as something completely natural for me to feel when I step outside of my comfort zone, it’s ok for me to feel it and still keep going. Learning how to calm your mind and body in this is key.
My Key Takeaway if Your Feeling Lost
I know life might feel overwhelming right now, but I know you can do this. Yes, it may take some time but it will be worth it. You deserve the life you’re dreaming of and I hope you realise that you living that life is wayyyy more important than other people’s opinions, your fears or doubts. You’ve got this!
